Kongs Jungle Lounge ...

Life here on the Secret Island can be a lonely one... I've had to perfect my Mai Tai Making because to be honest the nearest bar worthy of the Tiki name is a twenty hour drive away! For that reason time on Tiki Central leaves me feeling blue as I too would like the choice and the local bar to call home that US based Tiki aficionados enjoy.

So you can imagine my delight when I heard of a new bar/resturant through Tiki Talk opening up just a couple of hours away down at Bondi. The restaurant specializes in what head chef Adam Dundas Taylor calls “Poly-asian” food, which takes its inspiration from places like Nobu and Hugos. The cocktail menu has modern, but respectful versions of favorites like Kongs Mai Tai, Marama Rum Punch, Beachbum Berry’s Miehana, and more.

I'll certainly be making a visit soon...

Tiki Farm Magazine ...

Keeping up to date with all the great new creations coming from Tiki Farm is tough ... as they pointed out in their latest newsletter they've been asked to create mugs for designers, restuarants and events across the world ... even those far flung places like Australia!!

To help out they are going to print with the very first copy of the Tiki farm Collectors magazine...

We decided the best way to keep all of our collectors “in the know” is with our new magazine. For years now, we’ve been fielding so many questions about “what’s coming out”, “what events are coming up”, “what artists are doing new mugs”, etc. We’ve been asked for years to do a magazine.

Also if you weren't able to get to any of the events held this year but still want the mug (and maybe a t shirt) then get down to the Farm today as the surplus stock is being sold now...

What's wrong with this picture? ...

I came across this picture on PinUp Post (Well worth a look by the way!) At first glance it has everything ... the beautiful (... and former Wahine of the Week) Doris Mayday - check, a Tiki Bar - check, Tiki mugs - check, bottles of stuff - check and bamboo - check...

... now look closer! What is oh so wrong with this picture? Answers on a postcard to "You made a Mai Tai in what? Competition" The Secret Island, Pacific Ocean.
Closing date will be the day that the Tiki Gods wrath strikes the culprit down. ;0)

Appleton Estate Tiki Mug Design Competition ...

October 2010 saw the highly anticipated release of the new Appleton Estate Rum Tiki Mug. Although long associated with tiki, this was the third year that Appleton Estate designed their own, customised Tiki mug for people like me.

2008... front and centre.

The Appleton Tiki mug has received an almost cult following and can be seen to grace many of the top bars and bartender’s homes around Australia.

2009 Going, going ... gone!

Last year’s design of the ‘Appleton Rum God’ was the best yet. Designed and manufactured by Tiki Farm’s Holden Westland and Appleton Estate, “the mug far surpassed previous designs,” Holden explained.

2010 Their best yet!
In 2011 Brown Forman is giving you the chance to achieve immortality by being the brains behind their latest Appleton Estate Rum God Tiki Mug design. “We want to give you, fans of Tiki and lovers of Appleton Estate Rum, your chance to become etched in history by creating your own piece of Tiki immortality and designing the 2011 Appleton Estate Rum God Mug,” states Darren West, Innovation and Agency Brand Manager for Brown Forman.

Creative genius is demanded for this year’s challenge. Is your Rum God stranded on a deserted island with nothing but beautiful scantily clad natives and a lifetime supply of Appleton Estate Rum? To start with, all they want is for you to bring your inspiration to them in words. Entries will be reviewed by their panel of judges who will select their top three Rum God creations.

“Should your story be one of the three chosen finalists you will then work with Tiki farm to design and bring your Rum God to life in the form of the next Appleton Estate Rum God Mug,” West says. Once the top three are designed the choice is turned over to the bar tending community with the mugs and their stories going on-line to be voted for by the industry.

The winner takes a once in a lifetime trip to Jamaica where they’ll spend time with Appleton’s Master Blender Joy Spence and visit the estate. Runners-up will receive a bottle of the limited release Appleton Estate 21 Year Old. Deadline for submissions is Sunday 13 March 2011. Good luck! Click here for more info.

I recently came across some trailers for a short film tiled "Tikimentary" which went on to become a longer movie screened at the 2010 Hukilau. Tikimentary is
A road-movie searching for the ultimate Tiki experience. Take a trip through San Diego's Tiki Oasis, The Hukilau, in Fort Lauderdale and the Luau By The Lake, in fabulous Lake George. An intimate portrait of this new exotic urban tribe: the so-called "tikiphiles". They drink tropical drinks, dress in vintage clothes, listen to Exotica music, but most of all: are a big and colorful family. Starring: Tiki Kiliki, Otto Von Stroheim, Baby Doe, Marina The Mermaid, King Kukulele, Shag, Lenore "Tikilicious" & Steve Koppleman, Joe & Nicole Desmond, Harold Golen, Paul & Kelly Patterson, Suzanne Long, Sandy Future, Amy Eggers, Kiki Lenoue, David Lenoue.
Here are a couple of trailers to wet your appetite:

"The average person doesn't get it, they don't understand."

"Tiki casts a spell on you!"

"We are all looking for a paradise to escape to."

It was directed by Duda Leite, a Brazilian independent filmmaker currently living in São Paulo. He has directed some “cult” short films like “Serial Clubber Killer” (1994) Best Short Film at Mix Brazil, “Selma & Denise” (1995), “After the Fox” (1999) – Official Selection at OutFest in Los Angeles and Frameline Festival in San Francisco, and “Resmungo” (2002) which aired on MTV Brazil. The final version of the movie is currently available for watching on MUBI.com.

Beachbum Berry's Tiki+ iPhone app ...

My expired mobile contract provided me with a late Christmas present today a fourth generation iPhone, something that I've been after for a while. This opens up a whole new world of online Tiki opportunities!

My first downloaded app was an obvious choice, Tiki Drinks aficionado Jeff Beachbum Berry's Tiki+. For a mere $3.99 you get all of his published recipes that in book form would cost you over $45! It serves as a searchable database of tropical drinks recipes drawn from years of Jeff's detective work identifying the weird and wonderful mixtures of old school tiki bartenders.

Not convinced yet ... then here's more to wet your appetite!

* Over 150 drink recipes.
* Mark your favorites for easy-finding.
* Photos and old menu illustrations.
* Add your own notes to the recipes.
* Thumbnail histories of the drinks.
* Email a recipe with the touch of a button.

I'll be serving visitors to the Secret Island (... and myself!) some of these really soon!

Mai Tai Masterclass: Lesson One History ...

Talk to anyone who takes their Tiki Bar Kulture seriously and the Mai Tai is often the first taxi off the rank when happy hour starts. The classic Mai Tai is an unforgettable cocktail, an icy Jamaican rum and fresh lime juice drink with a subtle hint of oranges and almonds and a sprig of fresh mint for garnish. Now, that's what a Mai Tai should be. In the first of a series called the Mai Tai Masterclass we delve into the murky waters of its history...

The Mai Tai may be Polynesian in name, but it's American in origin, reportedly created by a legendary California restaurateur, the late Vic Bergeron of Trader Vic's fame.
"There's been a lot of conversation over the beginning of the Mai Tai. And I want to get the record straight," Bergeron said before he died. "I originated the Mai Tai. Many others have claimed credit. All this aggravates my ulcer completely. Anyone who says I didn't create this drink is a dirty stinker."

Don the Beachcomber meanwhile stated:
"There continues to be controversy over who originally came up with the Mai Tai. It has never bothered me that Vic Bergeron took credit, and I have never held a grudge. The plain fact is, there can be no truer form of flattery than when other people claim credit for your concepts and ideas and use them for their own benefit."

Based on circumstantial evidence history favors Team Trader, who, in a 1947 book, "The Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide (Revised)," told how he originated the Mai Tai in his Oakland restaurant:

"In 1944 after success with several exotic rum drinks, I felt a new drink was needed. I thought about all the really successful drinks- martinis, manhattans, daiquiris, all basically simple drinks. I took down a bottle of 17-year old rum. It was J. Wray; Nephew from Jamaica-surprisingly golden in color, medium bodied, but with the rich pungent flavor particular to the Jamaican blends. The flavor of this great rum wasn't meant to be overpowered with heavy addition of fruit juices and flavorings. I took a fresh lime, added some orange curacao from Holland, a dash of rock candy syrup, and a dollop of French orgeat for its subtle almond flavor. I added a generous amount of shaved ice and shook it vigorously by hand to produce the marriage I was after. Half the lime shell went into each drink for color and I stuck in a branch of fresh mint. I gave the first two to Eastham and Carrie Guild, friends from Tahiti who were there that night. Carrie took one sip and said, 'Mai tai roa ae.'In Tahitian this means,'out of this world, the best.' Well, that was that. I named the drink 'Mai Tai.'"
Both stories are certainly believable. In fact, in the book Tropical Rum Drinks Cuising by Don the Beachcomber, Arnold Bitner claims that the Mai Tai was created by Don in 1933. Bitner is alleged to have claimed that he has a Don the Beachcomber menu listing the Mai Tai before Trader Vic's claimed 1944 date. But there's a catch when Bitner listed the recipe for the "original" Mai Tai. Neither the drink nor the recipe, bore any resemblance to today's recipe for a classic Mai Tai. Did Don make first use of the name, without creating the modern drink? Did bartenders attempt to duplicate one of these drinks guessing at the ingredients, and experimenting until it tasted right? We may never know.

The Mai Tai became popular at Trader Vic's restaurants in Oakland, San Francisco and Seattle. In 1953, Bergeron introduced the Mai Tai to Hawaii at the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Hotels. Today, contemporary versions of the original Mai Tai may be found in Hawaii's finer drinking establishments, however more often the Mai Tai of today is a pale (or should that be technicolor!) version of the real thing.
